3 Ways To Keep Your AC Working Well This Fall

Posted on

This fall, you need to make sure that you take some time to address and take care of your air conditioning unit. The fall is a great time to take care of your air conditioning unit, especially since you are going to be winding down using it and will soon be switching over to your heating system. Here are three steps that you need to take this fall to keep your air conditioning and heating system working well.

#1 Change Your Filter

The first thing that you need to do is change your filter. It is a good idea to change the filter in your heating and cooling system at the end of the cooling season, at the start of fall, and during the start of spring.

Changing your air filter will ensure that you are breathing nice and clean air throughout the winter. Try to put in the highest level filter that you can in your system. For example, a HEPA filter will keep out very small particles and is great if you have anyone who has allergies in your house.

If you have a filter that can be cleaned, this is a good time to clean it off. However, if your filter has been in your unit for more than a year, it is still a good idea to change it out.

Write the date that you put your new filter into your air conditioning system on the side of the frame using a permanent marker. This will make it easier for you to know when to replace your air filter in the future.

#2 Clean The Outside Unit

The second thing that you need to do is clean the outside part of your unit. Before you clean it, turn off the power to your outside unit. This will keep you safe while cleaning your unit. Use some dish soap, warm water and a scrub brush to clean the outside of air conditioning unit. Make sure that you get rid of all dirt build-up and remove all debris from on top of your air conditioning unit and from around your unit as well. Sweep around your unit to make sure the base around it is clean as well.

#3 Check Your Ducts

Finally, check all of your ducts. Start by checking all the duct covers. Remove the covers and wipe down both sides with a wet rag or a cleaning wipe. Then, use your vacuum cleaner to clean down your ducts as far as your vacuum cleaner can reach without damaging the ducts. This will help ensure that the air that comes out of your air filter and through your ducts remains clean until it reaches your lungs.

Taking the three steps above will keep your heating and cooling system working well this fall and will help ensure that you have clean air to breathe as well. For more information, contact local professionals like Scott's Heating & Air Conditioning Services.
