Skipping Air Conditioning Maintenance Can Cause Various Problems

Posted on

There isn't too much you have to worry about when it comes to your central air conditioning system. Make sure you know how often the air filter needs to be replaced and be sure to do so as needed, have the system serviced at the start of summer each year before using it, and stay diligent with watching for problems so you can have them fixed right away. Aside from these few things, you can sit back and enjoy the refreshing cool air produced by your system and not give too much thought to the system. However, any neglect of these few things can prove problematic, and here are some reasons why:

Increased allergies and breathing problems

You may think of your central air as just the method you use to cool the home. However, it also plays a very important role in keeping your home's air quality better. The system will remove contaminants such as dust, pet dander, pollen, and other things out of the air due to its filters. These contaminants are pulled into the filter when the system kicks on and they get trapped inside of the filter.

This means the air that gets cooled and put back into the home is much cleaner. Without proper maintenance, your system may not clean the air as well and this means all those contaminants can remain in the air for your family to constantly breathe in. This can increase the number of allergies people have, increase the number of asthma attacks any asthmatics have, cause family members to have irritated eyes, and lead to other problems with anyone in the home that has other respiratory issues or some other health conditions.

Stress on the system

Neglecting any of the routine maintenance can end up putting much more stress on the system. For example, dirty filters cause the system to have to work harder to pull air in. Also, dirty filters can cause the system to freeze and at this point, it will stop working and you will find your home without air conditioning, possibly right when you need it the most.

Skipping the annual servicing can cause something that's wrong with the system can also cause it to work harder because it is compromised. Not only can these things cause damage to important components, but some things can lead to complete failure of the system and you'll even notice higher electric bills when the system is struggling.
